Shore Fest 2018

Usher in Autumn with a fun, free festival in the park!

On Saturday, September 22nd, Astoria Park Alliance will bring its signature Shore Fest event back to Astoria Park. The event festivities will take place on the Main Lawn adjacent to the Bocce Court off Shore Boulevard with local sponsorship from Ridgewood Savings Bank.

The event has intentionally been scheduled for the first day of Autumn to take advantage of comfortable weather that late September offers.

Live music will be performed on a main stage procured by The Alliance with a rotating set of local musicians from 1 - 5 pm including The Fogo Azul Drumline, East River Blues Band and more!

Shore Fest promises to bring fun for all ages with classic competitions like a watermelon eating contest, potato sack races, egg on a spoon and bean bag toss. Local Astoria retailers have donated generous gift prizes for Shore Fest participants.

Shore Fest will also be a place to learn a new skill or hobby like bocce, yoga, zumba, bird watching, and even improv acting. Simply Fit Astoria will be leading live cardio dance demos at 2pm. A Donut eating contest for all ages will be supported by new Astoria donut shop Sugar & Water.  Kids will be encouraged to get their faces painted and enjoy assorted arts and crafts activities on the main lawn.

Astoria Park Alliance is celebrating its eleventh-year anniversary, and 2018 marks the organization's first full year as an official 501(c)(3) non-profit. APA welcomes the community to celebrate these achievements while connecting with other Astorians in enjoying the park’s beauty. Shore Fest is a free and fun festival that promises to close out the summer in style.

Attendees are encouraged to RSVP on Facebook and check social media for programming updates. In case of inclement weather, Shore Fest will proceed the following day.

Much Ado About Nothing (Performance)

Much Ado About Nothing is a delicious cocktail of wit, delight, and heart that poses challenging questions about why we choose to forgive those who have hurt us most intimately. This free, 90-minute, family-friendly production explores how the play’s depictions of gender roles illuminate our current struggle for equality and celebrates coming together as community to laugh, love, and mend. Featuring live acoustic music, professional classical actors with experience from the Old Globe in San Diego to Shakespeare’s Globe in London, and visits a variety of venues in Queens and Manhattan to bring this timeless frolic into our communities.

The Production is led by actor-manager Laura Piccoli (Unhealthy at Battalion Theatre Co. and is produced in partnership with Long Island City Artists at the Plaxall Gallery and the Astoria Park Alliance. The production will play shows in Queens at the Plaxall Gallery, Astoria Park, Queensbridge Park, and Rainey Park as well as in Manhattan at the West End Theatre. Father's Day Classic Car Show

Father's Day Classic Car Show

Astoria Park Alliance is excited to host this new event coming to Shore Blvd along the East River on Father’s Day. Shore Blvd aka "The Strip" will be closed to traffic allowing the community to check out dozens of classic cars from around the region. Park-goers of all ages are encouraged to meet the car owners and learn about their vehicles.

Live music, craft activities, food and gift vendors will also stretch along "The Strip," making for a unique and exciting Astoria experience.  Classic car owners will have their vehicles professionally judged in a variety of categories, with trophy presentations on stage to conclude the event.

Astoria Park, with its gorgeous views of Manhattan, has a long history of being a magnet for car and motorcycle enthusiasts. Walk the strip on any given day and you are likely to run into proud vehicle owners parked along the riverside showing off their rides and enjoying the view. The Father’s Day Classic Car Show aims to embrace the past, while looking to the future.

“Shore Boulevard lends itself to this type of event. It’s a natural destination for Astorians and car lovers alike,” says APA Board Member Miriam Fodera.  The Father’s Day Classic Car Show was conceived by Fodera, and she is also one of the lead event organizers. “I love the look on people’s faces when they see a vintage car! It’s a moment to stop and admire— even if you’re not a car lover.”

Award winning singer-songwriter D.B. Rielly will be featured on the main stage, performing two sets of their wide-ranging collection of American roots music, including zydeco, blues, and country.

Featured vendors that include The Breakfast Shack, Bench Flour Bakers, Astor Apiaries and HellGate Farm will offer refreshments as well as last minute Father’s Day gifts.

The Father’s Day Classic Car Show aims to embrace the past, while looking to the future. Astoria Park Alliance is happy to introduce this celebration to the public with the assistance and sponsorship support from Old Astoria Neighborhood Association.

Join us for this special day along one of the most iconic strips in New York City.  While the event is free to the public there is a $15 entry fee  for each vehicle. Car owners interested in entering their vehicles are encouraged to contact Astoria Park Alliance by email at getinvolved@astoriaparkalliance.org

Attendees are encouraged to RSVP on Facebook and Eventbrite.
